Level of competition at the WSOP???

the conventional wisdom in these forums is that the WSOP, the ME in particular, is the fishiest tournament you'll ever find. Plenty of people that satelited in from an Internet site, or rich guys that just pony up the 10gs and have no fornicating idea what the fornicate they're doing, or some idea about what they're doing, but they THINK they know more than what they actually do know.

I'm just repeating what I've read here. I've never been there.

If you can beat $20+ SNG's you're probably +EV in the Main Event.

I would say the ME and 1500$ events are very soft. Probably similar to a 10$ MTT online soft.

The 2500, rebuy and 5K events are much more difficult. Probably similar to a 109 online MTT.

wow $10 MTT online soft on avaerage for the ME and 1500? I figured they were soft but not that soft. Almost makes me want take a stab at a $1500 event now, lol

I was thinking the average competition level would be of 200 MTT or something along those lines, but i can see the how the division of buy-in vs skill level makes sense.

The 1500 event is the cheapest event so everybody that wants to play the WSOP has to play that if they don't satellite into the ME or want to pony up for a higher buyin. Those middle of the road buy-ins of 2K, 3K or 5K cost more and the random person wouldn't pay that when they can just play a 1500 so the competition is tougher.

It is close to $200 MTT, but only one specific kind - sunday millions on stars. I'd say that tournament gives you a very good idea what to expect at WSOPME, opponents-wise.

Ahh thanks. So one could use the Sunday million as a way to test one abiliities. If you can't cash there or if one gets run over in play you're probably not going to do well in the ME.


Would you say the lesser buyin events are the same or would you agree with a previous poster who compared the $1500 buyin NLHE event to have an average player skill level to be on par with a $10 online MTT on say Stars.

I mean obviously if you final table a $1500 event you'll probably be up against way above average players but the same can be said in a $10 MTT as the final table would have better then avgerage players as well.

I played event 37 as well. Made it to just before the bubble (ran into a straight flush, oh well). My first table played tight and relatively passive; very few large pots. My second table had one pro I knew of (John Phan), who was very quiet while I was there. After 10 levels, I would say 6-7 of the players at my table were solid players, 3-4 were soft. I was pleasantly surprised at how soft the tables were but by the bubble stages, the average skill had gone up considerably. I did not play the ME but believe that the other 1500s played similarly.

I don't agree with that at all. I've played in a few $26ish online tournaments and played in a $1500 event at last year's WSOP. There were over 1000 entries in it, and I would say the bottom 200 or 300 were not so good, but after that I thought they were tougher than the online tournaments I've played in (and cashed in).

ME = Sunday Million
1500 = Old party weekdays
2500/5000 = Stars 300+20/UB 200r

The $1500 event has a reasonably percentage of professional players. The same cannot be said for a $10 online MTT.
