I watched some show on Discovery about ants and there were some crazy ants in Africa, I think, that take down all sorts of large animals. They talked about a few cases of humans falling victim, several infants I think, but they mentioned cases where people had passed out drunk and been found dead. Cause of death: suffocation from ants in the lungs. [censored] terrible way to go.

Which was quite common in the middle ages. But often the wood was wet and it smouldered for a long time. So the guys legs would be slowly burned off while the rest of him was still alive. At that rate it would take hours before the fire consumed enough of his body to actually cause death. That would suck.

I would think being slowly crushed to death would also suck. Tied down, a platform on top, one more pound of weight added every few minutes. I'm claustrophobic and that scares the beejezus outa me.

you people are all wrong. the worst way to die by far is this insidious torture deveoped by the romans:
basically, you were shackled / tied down, and a metal cage was placed around your head. several large rats were then put into the cage. outside the cage hot embers or fire were placed close to the bars. the rats, in an effort to get away from the fire would EAT THEIR WAY THROUGH YOUR [censored] HEAD.

variations unclude putting the cage around the midsection or chest.
