Re: stars 30+3 ak facing push preflop!
Fold unless he's been doing this a lot.
You're never dominating this guy, and you're a 54/46 dog to QQ/JJ (the best case scenario). Occassionally this is a monkey with 88 or something but just save your chips, there are much better spots. |

Re: stars 30+3 ak facing push preflop!
A tossup. 8152 to win 9852 gives you 1.2 to 1. About dead even given his range of likely holdings (almost certainly a pair under AK).
Since you have no read on the player, you're pretty much going to have to let other factors decide this for you. How close you are to the money at this point, how you think you fare skillwise compared to the other players, etc, etc... If you think you are one of the better players in the tourney, you fold this easily and wait for a better opportunity. Being the donk that I am, I'd probably call and hope the coin flip went my way. I'm probably going to get punked by a better player at some point, so I might as well just let the cards decide our fate. |

Re: stars 30+3 ak facing push preflop!
Stop with this folding crap. We can't necessarily put his range on just pairs in which we are behind. People make this play with KQ,AQ,AJ,etc. Lets gamble, get a bigger stack and go for the win by calling.

Looks like an obvious resteal. Call. And win >75% of the time. +EV IMO.

Re: stars 30+3 ak facing push preflop!
I usually call this, a small reraise is much more threatening than this wild push. Only a really weak player would push AA or KK here (or a good player who knew you well) so you're going to get a lot of pairs where you are a slight dog here as well as another AK or even AQ/AJ from poor players. I don't mind being a slight dog when a win will put me in really good contention. Your stack is currently deep, so a fold isn't terrble, but I think you need to take these gambles to win big field tournaments.
