Continuation Betting

I understand that I need to look at the texture of the flop and think about the range of the opponent. But, I am wondering how often people are using the c-bet in position or out of position. Because if you through it out there and get re-raised you more than likely have to fold and the c-bet will bleed off a lot of chips. What should my strategy be?
