Stealing Cable

So ive done this before at some crappy apartments and it was no big deal. A freind of mine who does it everywhere he lives just got a pair of pliers and made a few changes to our box. Ive also read from several local online forum posts that they did it with no problem, even when the cable ppl found out - they just said "its only xx.xx$/month" and disconnected it.

I just recently moved and I want cable again but I dont wanna pay the 50$ bullsh1t installation fee. Is this a bad idea? -ev?
