Audiophiles: Talk Useless Nonsense to Me Here

I'm looking for some stereo speakers for 20x12 room, in an apartment. It doesn't need to be overpowering, I probably am not going to be playing it that loud because of my neighbors. I probably would want a sub too, unless I can get speakers where I don't need it??? I'm looking to spend like $600 or less.
