Default Putters (different)

So I got a new putter this year that is the correct height, has a better grip and is heavier than my original Wilson putter. It feels good but solid contact is not automatic...I have to have a perfectly tempo'd stroke to hit the sweet spot.

But when I was putting around with my old putter I found that I make better contact (like 90% or more solid hits).

Besides it being a $20 putter, do people cut these down or put on a new shaft and better grips? Where would I get this done and will it cost 5x the original cost of my $20 putter?

p.s. as far as I know (which isn't much) the lie angle seems to be the same.
