This is very true, but I have found that sometimes the negative reactions will tend to only come out in specific contexts. First year out of college I moved into an apartment with a really good friend and two guys I had never met. All of them were doing Teach for America, working brutal hours and not making that much. The two roommates I didn't know would brag to all of their guy friends about my ingenuity and make the poker success seem well deserved. Their female acquaintances got a very different story and I would even occasionally catch them saying things that were clearly intended to make me seem like a gambling degenerate.
