new york city as a whole is one of the safer cities in the country, and that doesn't even get into the fact that the place people spend most of their time (lower manhattan) is safer than the most dangerous parts of the city by a huge amount.

new york also probably has the best collection of top private schools in the country, as well as some amazing public schools (though those are hard for non-genius kids to get into)
