Default hitting one-handed drill. any advice?

this summer i started practicing my iron shots basically every day. before, i was hitting it thin a lot, and i couldn't hit any club higher than 5-iron. i am doing various things: hitting into the net, hitting wiffle balls, hitting foam balls, driving range.

i've been in discussions with some good-amateur/semi-pro people, and the things they recommend are working on my takeaway and one of the drills is hitting the ball one-handed (left as i am right-handed obv). so i started practicing it and i can't hit anything. i am all over the place. my swing isn't too long, less than a 1/4, but i have absolutely no control of the club with my left hand. the only way i can hit it is if i grab the club with the finger tips of my right hand, just to guide it.

does anyone have any advice, tips, etc. even if it's to just stop the drill.
