Also, it's psychological. I don't want a K or Q to come on the turn, and then force me into a difficult decision, knowing I might have the best hand, but also that I'll probably face another bet on the river. Raising gets him to check, so I can check behind, without having to play any guessing games on the turn.

Also, checking behind could get him to bet the river with a hand he wouldn't call the turn with.
