newbie practice question

So I got a set of clubs, just played for my 2nd time, and am very passionate about the game thus far. I have a net to practice driving (which has helped a ton). However, many say that you can improve your game most by practicing your short game. I can chip around the back yard, but now what to practice my putting. Is there a way to practice without going to a course and paying? Practice on carpet?
