When exactly did Sportscenter start to become unwatchable?

Discussion has been made already about how this 'Who's more NOW' ridiculousness is just the most recent example of how Sportscenter is making it self more and more unwatchable.

But when did SC 'jump the shark'? I know it's been bad for a few years now, but I remember ~15 years ago as a kid, I'd look forward to going on vacations with the family just so I could stay in a hotel room with ESPN so I could watch Sportscenter. It might just be I liked SC back then only because we didn't have cable at home, but I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it was because it was just flat-out better than it is now.

But I can't figure out what signalled the start of the downhill trend of SC.. any ideas?
