LA Galaxy unveiling of Beckham yesterday. WTF??

I'm from UK and caught this live yesterday. Wow. What a circus.
Are big signings in other US sports as over the top as this? I couldn't believe my eyes. Confetti floating down, music pumping, and everyone behaving like he's god and will single handedly make soccer hugely popular in the US.

He is NOT going to convert soccer haters to the game. He's hardly a Ronaldinho type player, who can entertain those with a limited knowledge of the game with his speed, flair and skills. I just can't see thousands of new fans springing up just because the Galaxy forwards will have more accurate crosses coming to them from the right wing.

What is the general feeling in the US about this?
