She struck me in Being John Malkovich, I remember thinking 'wow, who is that?'

She has been nominated for Best Supporting Oscars twice, maybe that's the kiss of death for some as pointed out elsewhere here.

She looks 30 years older than her supposed age range in 40YOV. Her face looks like a death rictus. I remember being very surprised that someone who looked like that could be a female romantic lead at all.
