but most of them aren't lunatics. they're just easily swayed.

Falwell helped establish the idea that Christians should vote Republican. set aside your religious views for a minute. most people (religious or not) don't do due dilligence in researching candidates. so, a lot of Christians vote a party line because of an expectation Falwell helped foster. it doesn't make them lunatics, just lazy when it comes to voting.

also, remember how close that election was
