Default Low on the totem pole

Is using the expression "low on the totem pole" a racist remark?

I said that at the office today and then wondered if it was or not. No one said anything.

Some of you may remember, I'm the guy who got told using the expression "the pot calling the kettle black" was racist.

I work in a hyper-corporate environment that's a little overly sensitive about that sort of thing, IMO. I would ask a native american person but I don't know any, not that I can think of anyway.

What say you, OOT?
