Default Spyware scanners-- More harmful than helpful?

I recently had a computer tech. work on my laptop and he recommended against using any spyware removal tools (adaware, etc.). He said that these programs mess your computer up more than if you had used nothing. Is there any truth to this? He recommended ONLY using NOD32 virus scan and nothing else (no registry cleaners, spyware cleaners, or other system tools). Should I follow his advice?
