Encryption required for playing poker over a VPN?

I'm on my way to set up a VPN-tunnel with a commercial company. One thing that surprised me was that their standard package doesn't include any encryption. Is that normal or are they unprofessional? I don't know exactly what the encryption does. Do I want encryption for playing poker over a VPN?
