one more addendum. what he had (and showed) is apart of his bluffing hands. He must, therefore, call light on the flop - since you have most of the 8s, we'll classify that as the 9s - he must then semibluff it on the turn - then bluff the river. a jack, which may play that way, will take the showdown on the river. better hands then that, like 2 pair, which you beat, typically take the showdown, because there is such a limited amount of hands that MIGHT fold if they bet.
if i was in a groove im sure i could find a way to value bet AJ here (in villains shoes) but most of the time a bet here is a straight or (small %) flush, and rarely (and the odds you have are NOT good enough to call) the type of bluff it was
