Default Playing an underpair against the blinds (general question)

I am very new to poker (< 2 months) and I have a general strategy question that bothers me since my second week. Then I read that it's recommended to raise on the button with small pocket pairs when it's folded up to you. I found no advice on how to proceed when the blinds refuse to fold and we don't flop a set, though. In case we raised with 22 we would look at 5 overcards by the river.

I found nothing about this with this site's search function.

Can anybody here describe a general line of play for this situation?
