Teach me about Video Editing.

I have a pretty boring job, so while I'm walking around at work I have to think of things to keep me entertained.

I've run a few things through my brain and I thought of a project I'd really like to do. It's an alternate ending to a movie using scenes spliced from the movie and I think it'd be pretty funny/clever.

So Questions:

1. What kind of program would I need to do this?
2. How difficult is it to edit video?
3. Would I have to edit the video clips and then put together an audio track to overlay onto it?
