All in situation at trop in NYC

5-5 no limit at the trop. 3 players in the hand, First player with $50 stack puts in $30, next player (big stack) says "I'll put you all in" and throws in $50, third player calls, first player calls all in. I tell big stack to be careful, because what he said may be construed as going all in. He assures me (in not so many words) that i am in idiot and that everyone at the table knew he meant that he was betting $50.

Am i an idiot? Are there clubs/rooms around where this might be misinterpreted as him going all in?
