nate-

how high is a 50 similarity index? i did some quick looking thru some player cards and it seems fairly strong.

also, does it equate to a % of how likely said player is to match his comps year?

A sim index of 50 is pretty high. Choi fits a pretty common typology: big slow guy, late-count hitter, lots of power. As you've pointed out, a lot of these guys peak a little bit late. I'd tend to have more confidence in a breakout forecast when it's associated with a high similarity score like this one.

The catch-22 is that Choi's performance seems to be strongly correlated with his job security. He does well in a regular platoon role, okay when used more sporadically, and terribly as a pinch-hitter. Still an outstanding pick-up for the Sox, but he might have made more sense for a team like the D-Rays.

Nate,

is it correct then to assume that a guy like that who works the count would tend to flourish in a situation where he's playing regualarly in a dangerous lineup in a hitter's park? or is that too much of a leap?

Nate,

Why would the Dodgers release such a guy for nothing? Why would seven teams pass on the guy before the Sox put in the claim (this one is obviously team dependent)?

Are some baseball gms really this bad or is does it come down to something like what formula is used to evaluate talent?

Maybe alot of GM's use the kind of thinking like ".240 lifetime average" or ".349 obp weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" or "I watch this guy play all the time, and believe me, I don't care what your evidence is, he can't play."

Many GMs are terrible at their jobs and/or constrained by other employees(perhaps they want Choi, but the owner doesn't want to spend $750 or the manager won't use him).

As an Indians fan, I'm upset. Choi is Broussard with upside.

Choi hasn't been the same since he had that concussion while playing for the small bears

[/ QUOTE ]

About 10 minutes into the delay when Choi was lying in the infield, a friend of mine asked this gem: "Is Hee Sop Choi Japanese for 'delay of game'?"

That is funny. When I was at the WBC final, around the 7th or 8th inning, the song "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" came on and my wife asked, "Is this really appropriate?".
