Use of the word Metagame in poker context
I got tired of reading the word Metagame in some of the poker posts and not understanding its use. so I finally looked it up.
From Wikipedia, Metagaming is a broad term usually used to define any strategy, action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed rule set, uses external factors to affect the game, or goes beyond the supposed limits or environment set by the game. In role-playing games, metagaming is the use of out-of-character knowledge in an in-character situation. A character played by a metagamer does not act in a way that reflects the character's in-game experiences and back-story. Would someone explain the use of the word Metagame in poker context? thanks! |

Re: Use of the word Metagame in poker context
Metagame in a poker context means how do you play your hand because of or to affect play in other hands, as opposed to what is the best play for this one situation. So you are thinking things like history, setting guys up for future situations and such.
IMO, using metagame is meaningless at micros unless you consider treating a tag player differently from a fish metagame. |

Re: Use of the word Metagame in poker context
So to use as an example: Holding 56s you raise from CO, the button calls. Flop comes 8 T 2 Rainbow, you bet 2/3rds pot. Button calls, turn comes a 5, you bet 2/3rds pot, button calls. River comes an Ace and you go all in. Button calls and you lose to A T.
5 hands down the road you take the same line with the nuts, knowing that the guy won't believe you. That is Metagame. Another example would be raising from UTG with Q8o and showing it. This type of behavior can get other people to think you are a maniac. But I agree that metagame is pretty useless at the micros. |
