Live 1/2 NL - Did I play this 2nd nut too fast?
Vegas Venitian poker room (very nice). 1/2 NL buy in for $300. Stack now at about $215.
Typical loose passive 1/2 table in the afternoon. Villian has not spalshed around too much so I put him as tight. Hero on button with 9,10o. 3 limpers to me so I limp. Villian in BB raises to 12. Folds to me and I call the extra $10 figuring I have position against a tight player. I can let this hand go if I don't hit the right flop. Flop comes Q, K, 8, with 2 clubs. BB cheks, I check not wanting to get check raised off my hand. Turn is J. BB bets 10, I raise to 30, he re-raises to 60. I re-raise all-in for about $170 more. Only one hand I fear here. Other likely hands I have crushed at the moment (AA, AK and high sets.) Played too fast or got to get all the money in now? Thanks |

This is exactly why you fold this hand preflop.

I think I wait until the river to raise. If you call the turn there will be around $150 in the pot and you only have $170 left.
So it will be tough for him not to call your river bet/raise. |

Or were you being sarcastic? I probably fold this preflop even with position on a tight player. Once you call there, I think you played the rest of the hand fine. You're only behind one hand a lots of river cards scare you/shut villain down. His 3bet says he's pretty proud of his hand...go ahead and get it all in here. |

Re: Live 1/2 NL - Did I play this 2nd nut too fast?
What kind of hand does a tight player raise with from OOP preflop, but check the flop on that board? The most likely that comes to mind is JJ, which just became a set on the turn. I think that a tight player would have led out on the flop with the other possibilities (AA, AK, AQ). I think a tight player even bets something on the flop with a set (most likely candidates being KK or QQ) because of all the draws that the flop presents.
Was this guy capable of raising OOP with AT against multiple limpers, the only hand that you fear? From your limited description of him, it doesn't sound that way, and so I think that you are likely ahead. In any event, where does all of that leave you? If he has JJ, then I think he calls your all-in turn bet. If he has the other likely holdings that you beat now (such as a pair + gutshot or flush draw), I think a tight player folds to an all-in on the turn (more so in the gutshot scenario than in the flush draw scenario). However, I think a tight player with all of those holdings will call your river value bet or raise if the board still favors you, and that is why I would opt to wait until then to make a big bet. One final thought occurs to me. If the river is a blank and this opponent pushes on you, then I think that you can safely fold. Once again, the way that I understand your description of this guy is that he was weak/tight. If that type of player leads into you on the river with a big bet, it's hard to put him on anything other than the hand that you fear. |

I never put a weak tight on A-10 with a raise from the BB, you're good here 95% of the time.
