I would highly recommend always re-checking your two hole cards when the dealer is preparing to deal the flop. I do this each hand - and then repeat my cards in my head as if I were saying them out loud (without moving my lips...).

It cuts down on these types of mistakes - and when a 1-suited flop hits I don't need to check my hole cards to see if I have one of that suit...

[/ QUOTE ]

QFT - there's a great two second window between the end of preflop betting and the flop being dealt. Use it and you are a step ahead of the field.

Just be careful, I see people that only recheck when they 'have' to - which tells me when they have suited cards.

I always recheck my hand post flop. I do this every hand whether I know I have 2 red queens or something less distinct. I like to think this prevents me from giving off that tell, at least.

Stuck and tilting, I made a bad limp/call against a $60 preflop raise with 45s suited at the end of a session against a nice guy regular who sometimes can be a little maniacal. Flop comes Q23 and I call another $100 with my open ender not realizing he only has $100 left (did I say I was tilting?). Turn is a 6. He pushes and I say "sorry Dan, I have to call, I have the nuts". Dan flips up Q8o, and I flip up my hand, Dan looks at my cards, then the board, then back at my cards, puzzled. River is a 5. Dealer gives me a weird look, Dan looks heartbroken, dealer ships me the pot, I give the dealer my cards with a nice tip. The whole time I didn't even look at my own cards.

Guy next to me says "you really needed that river". I say "no I didn't, I turned a straight." He says, "You had 65 of diamonds, the river gave you two pair." Immediately I knew he was right, the image of the 6d5d I had peeked at just a minute before suddenly seared itself into my brain.

I say "I think I need to leave now" and immediately rack up.

Amusing story. When I start misreading my hands I usually take it as a sign to rack up to.

Thanks guys.

A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] was mine, and I was 100% sure the Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] was the Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

Oh well, it happens.

They ought to use four-colour decks live.

As I was walking away from the table, the dealer says "You had flush." I looked back, asked if my hand was dead. When he told me it was, I chuckled and walked away.

Learned a lesson.

I was realllly close to this happening once; I flopped TPGK with Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] and the board came running hearts; I got all-in with a donk and he flipped a backdoored flush with 75. I was like "zomg" and about to muck my hand when I looked at my cards again, debating whether I should turn them over so the table would feel sorry for me (lawl) and then I realized I actually had Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. Phew!

I've started doing this since then and it works pretty well. I say "Ad Ts" in my head like I'm playing online.

Yeah, the first time I played $1/2 live, it was a good chunk of coin in play for me. I called an all in on the river when I was sure I had a straight. I was "one off" - had 42 instead of 32, or 43 instead of 23, something like that. But I felt like Austin Powers and the dealer said in that tone of voice "You have a pair of 2s, sir." I felt like saying in my Austin Powers tone of voice "Well I must admit, cards aren't my bag, baby." I realized I was too tired to be playing and went to bed, a couple hundred in chips lighter.
