Home poker cheating - how common is it?

It's shady in a bar tournament too. Just play your game, don't dump chips. That's extremely unethical.

I've come across serious cheating in both home and casino games. I assume it is rife on the internet; I know a lot of people who have convinced themselves that they must collude to even the playing field against the other colluders.

'Mild' cheating is absolutely rife. I'd include in this the player/dealer glimpsing a player's cards as he collects the muck, masking high value chips; sitting low in the chair to glimpse high-dealt cards, peeking at insufficiently protected live hands etc. It's all part of the game, but regrettable nonetheless.

This is insane that so many people have cheaters at their home games. I play such small stakes that I couldn't fathom someone trying to cheat.

I didn't beleive anyone would cheat my $0.25/$0.50 blinds $40 max buy-in home game either until I got real suspicous of one guy and he finally confessed.

Some people undervalue how important good friends and good games are.

I used to play in a frat house game with my roommate, and the play was unbelievably bad. One night I was running really hot and getting hit with the deck like never before.

After the game broke I was leaving with my roommate and started to think about some of the hands I played so I could discuss them with him (he was a much better player), and realized that every single huge hand I had was on his deal (I dished out two or three ugly coolers). I knew he was a bit of a mechanic and these guys were clueless but it never even crossed my mind that he would try that. I don't think I've ever been so angry after a winning session, and I never sat with him again.

I guess what it really comes down to is that if you play any game for money, reguardless of the stakes, there will always be someone trying to find that "edge". Whether it's flat out cheating, or hiding large value chips, sitting low in their seats to see high pitched cards, or even looking at unprotected hole cards (not cheating imo). Somebody will always be trying to find an advantage over others players.
