Re: A personal Rules of Golf story
[ QUOTE ]
Wow. I'd go totally apeshit. [/ QUOTE ] There was a small degree of satisfaction to come afterward. We played a series of 9 one day tournies on this course. A couple of tournies later I find myself again in a playoff with 'dad'. First hole, he pipes it down the middle. I skank it off into the right woods. I chip out. Still away, I miss the green with a 9 iron. Dad wedges it to 12 feet. I chip in, he misses, I birdie #2. He cusses! And one more- Same course. One day event. My foursome is the last in the tourney. After 13 holes I'm playing terrible. A very good friend of mine in the same group is -3. A storm is brewing, clouds are dark. A delay is inevitable. My buddy hits it deep into the left gunch. In chopping out of this junk, his ball hits his golf cart. Add 2. Eventually we make it up to the green. Lightening strikes. Thunder. Buddy has an 8 footer for triple. I say, "we need to go in now." Buddy, "ok, but I want to go on and finish this hole." I say, "No! We need to go in NOW!" He's stunned by my tone. But we mark and go in. As we ride back to the clubhouse, I tell him there is some chance that the storm sets in and we can't finish. If that happens, there is some chance that they will decide to pay out according to the score on all holes finished. (13 holes) He smiles. And it plays out just like that, and he get 1st place check! |

Re: A personal Rules of Golf story
If you have a big name in golf you get great rulings all the time. Nicklaus was notorious for getting drops that other players wouldn't. Palmer was in a well known rules dispute involving playing two balls. He had an embedded ball and after being denied a drop he made a double and THEN decided to play a second ball. They later let him count his second ball for a par and he won the Masters.

Re: A personal Rules of Golf story
If he hits a shot after the delay is announced isn't that auto-DQ?

Re: A personal Rules of Golf story
If play is suspended due to unsafe conditions, then you may not play another shot under penalty of DQ.
If play is suspended for other reasons such as darkness, course conditions, etc., then you are entitled to, but not required to finish the hole. BO |

Link [/ QUOTE ] That is a version that to the uninitated makes Palmer look clean. But that isn't the way you play a disputed ruling, you need to announce your intention to play two balls. Palmer played the plugged ball, made a 5 and then decided to try another ball. Arnie is still the King. |

[ QUOTE ]
BTW, I have also played two balls when a rule was in question, only I putted a "wrong" ball when I was on the green?? That's right, I had two balls on the green and still putted a wrong ball. The hardest part about that was I wasn't sure which of my two balls the penalty whould be applied to. Not both, obviously, as I could only have been attempting to hit one of them. Anyway, I think I got a 6 with both balls....it was a long time ago. [/ QUOTE ] Man thats hilarious. I can just imagine the looks on the guys faces in the group behind watching this circus act. "WTF, the dude in the green shirt just took like 6 putts!?! What the hell, he's still putting!!!" |
