IMHO, this is ridiculously cheap and frankly offensive. I think in his position I would have tipped AT LEAST $20. I mean, seriously, why even bother tipping if you are just gonna tip $1?

[/ QUOTE ]

When I tip the Richard Pryor lookalike cab despatcher at the Rio $1 for opening a door and repeating my destination to the driver I do so for all the usual reasons. If I'd just won $1 million I'd still tip him a dollar. What difference does it make? I suspect OP must be a dealer as dealers seem to have an irrational delusion that any time anyone wins some money they deserve a share. Why? They didn't take the risk of investing their own cash so why should they share the reward?

If they've already taken 3% rake plus 3% for tips then that's more than enough.

The idea of tipping is pretty dumb.

Tipping should be reserved for when service workers go above-and-beyond their required job duty. Like if your A/C repairman fixes your A/C unit and notices you've got a flat tire as he's leaving, and assists you in replacing the tire.

Americans have become so lazy with this "people owe me" mentality. Doing your job right should be the norm. Doing a bad job should result in a discussion with your supervisor. Doing a bad job should not be the norm, with doing the job right resulting in some sort of bonus.

I mean, wtf?

3% of the prize pool? If first takes 1.6 mil the 3% of the total prize pool must be a quarter mil, am i missing something?

[/ QUOTE ]

1,600,000 X 0.03 is not 250,000.

Just because he won money doesn't mean he's required to throw it left and right to everyone he comes into contact with. It's those people's jobs. If he had that attitude he eventually wouldn't have much left now would he?

In my opinion the tipping thing goes a little too far. I mean tipping guys in bathrooms for handing you a towel in Vegas? Come on. I'll get the towel myself thank you very much. The people that play into that obviously get a rise out of "the treatment" and I don't begrudge them for it. I think it's shallow, but I don't begrudge them. If they want to blow their money like that, that's their prerogative but I'd rather give it to charity instead.

As someone said earlier, 3% was already taken out, and it's Dan. Conservative as ever.

[/ QUOTE ]

I HATE Bathroom attendants. It drives me crazy. Like, I'm in there to do my business, wash and dry my hands, and get out. I don't want to be expected to tip. Hell, I don't even want to have to say thank you, bathrooms are for pooping, not for talking. They just throw a wrench into the whole thing.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, and it is annoying. I don't want to take a towel from a bathroom attendant who might not have washed his hands right before handing me the towel - so I don't. And I don't really like having to be conversationally friendly to a total stranger when I am in there only to do my thing, clear my mind for a minute or two, wash up and get back to the table in a timely fashion.

Don't take towels from restroom attendants, that's my suggestion: it only helps to perpetuate an unsanitary custom. I didn't go in the restroom to be pestered.

On tipping bathroom attendants...

If I walk in and the joint doesn't smell totally like a bathroom, especially a stinky one *and you know what I'm talking about...

then they get the one dollar...

any hint of a bad defication... no chance

[/ QUOTE ]

What gets my goat is when you look for a clean stall and can't find one because the attendant is too busy standing around handing out towels to be bothered with little things like keeping the place decently clean.

1.6 million was just for first place, not the total prize pool.

pfffft, u dealers and staff should be lucky you get anything. you already rake. whenever i win, i try to skirt as little as possible. nobody tips me or helps me out when i go bust.

dealers should just shut theyre mouths. u guys already get plenty. just ake what the game gives and stfu.

now i'm starting to feel happy about electronic poker tables. no more dealers, no more tips and no more lame mistakes from lame dealers. most of u dealers dont even know how to keep yur deck hand down when u pitch the cards. terrible mechanics. shouldnt even have a job. go clean the toilets instead.

[/ QUOTE ]
A lot of people feel the way you do. I really don't know what to say, other than that e-tables and online poker are always options.

Also, I don't keep the rake, and it's very difficult to deal without the deck low and level for me when dealing. Keeping the deck square and using a cut card will help - and this is something that "most" dealers have very little problem with.

[ QUOTE ]
The American tipping culture is stupid. Why can't employers pay their staff properly and staff do the job they're paid for? Works fine everywhere else

Maybe it is, but it wasn't my idea.

I will say this - it's definitely unfair that the labor cost of having dealers is being paid for by some more than others. At least if they did away with the toke system and paid the dealers through higher overhead, every player would absorb dealers' wages equally, instead of the players that tend to be more generous.

Fine and well, but from the other side of the equation, it's also the norm that you pay for services. Whether it be primarily by tips or normal wages is besides the point. The cost of keeping poker rooms staffed is higher than the base wages paid by the casino - which, without tips, wouldn't even be legal since it's below the minimum wage.

Expecting good service, but not wanting to pay for it - doesn't that sound like the "people owe me" mentality you're talking about?

I love hearing from whining tip industry employees.
