Re: Wow, that was racist
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I'm not sure there's anything more stupid than making fun of people because of their race... [/ QUOTE ] except going on fatmonkeytilt every time the word "race" is mentioned. [/ QUOTE ] One key idea in life is that it's just so ridiculous. Money, fame, power, sex, hate, race. Poop, farts, and boners. Art, architecture, engineering, particle physics. Stubbing your toe, losing your keys, stepping on the cat. So easy to get wrapped up in all of this, but it's obviously meaningless. I was watching 300 again yesterday and thinking about how much of a GOD Xerxes really felt like when sitting on the toilet or tripping over his robes. The human capacity for ignorance doesn't end with racism, it extends to self-righteousness, overseriousness, and the inability to step back from ever-changing phenomena and cultivate the ability to laugh at just how silly it all is. |

Re: Wow, that was racist
this happened to a friend. he was in a convenience store and the counter girl says to him
her - "what are you" him - "i'm sorry, what do you mean?" her - "are you like chinese or something?" him - "no, i'm philipino" her - "oh, i thought so, cause your eyes aren't so chinky" while she said this, she actually made grabbed teh corner of her eyes with her fingers and made chinky eyes. racism? ignorance? she was not trying to be funny, but she was also not trying to be offensive. she just did it. i view this as a very similar act as the OP's incident, even though it was more blatant, mostly because it was spoken, and mimed. would we also see the same if they were 2 black guys and the walking girl threw up a bunch of gang signs or something? or the counter girl made big lips or someshit with hers? btw, i'm asian, i thought both the OP and what happened to my friend were hilarious. mostly cause ignorant stuff like that is hilarious. i don't really know what my point is. |

The girl in the OP knew full well that she was doing something offensive. |

Re: Wow, that was racist
[ QUOTE ]
The other point is this and then I'm off soapbox. We're less than 50 years removed from a time when very real, very painful very evil racism and discrimination was pervasive in this country. Frankly, I think it's a little soon to be laughing off these little coy moments of offensiveness as if we don't still face these types of issues. If posts and discussion like this serve to keep people aware, that's a fantastic thing. [/ QUOTE ] Interesting, because I think the fact that we're less than 50 years removed from (and in fact still have) serious racism and discrimination issues is one reason not to treat this incident to seriously (not that I think OP has done that). I don't want people to get use to hearing people cry racism and thinking, "meh, get over it". Its more of a pick your battles type thing. There are serious race/religion/discrimination issues in the world today, that I don't care about [censored] like this when its quite likely thats its just a dumb girl doing something stupid without any malicious intent. |
