I am primarily a limit player, and my girlfriend is taking a passing interest in learning how to play Poker. I initially got on track as a beginner by reading Winning Low Limit Holdem by Lee Jones, even if I subsequently had to unlearn some of the concepts as I improved.
My girlfriend isn't much of a game player by nature, although she has a Ph.D, so she certainly has the ability to learn poker. I realize that Miller's Small Stakes Holdem would probably be way too advanced for her to start, and I wouldn't expect her to have the time or interest to read 2+2. So, if I wanted to buy her a beginner's book as a gift, should I go with the latest addition from Jones, or lean towards something else? |

Ef Millers "Getting Started In Holdem"?
Covers both NL and Limit but I found it helpful at the start. |

There are two choices:
Getting Started in Hold'em by Ed Miller (Staying in the 2+2 family) or Beginners Guide to Limit Hold'em by Byron Jacobs Both good and I can't imagine any other book competing with one of the above (And Ed does not cover NL proper, just shortstacking NL) |

Internet Texas Hold'em was my first, and worked very well for a beginner IMO.

Getting started in Hold'em (Ed Miller) [/ QUOTE ] Haven't read Byron's book but that seems fine too. Maybe an amazon bundle pack is in order. |

Lee Jones book is still the best IMO despite it's theoretical mistakes

Hey chesspain,
I liked the lee jones one, though it has some errors. Think I remember hfap as very confusing when i read it, but there is probably some good stuff in there too. TOP is a good book too, probably my favorite. SSH has alot of good stuff too, but if you just want her to get started the lee jones one is probably better. Or you could tell her to search all my posts from micro-sstakes, lots of good advice back then Good luck |
