Re: Music Thread: Songs to hear at least once before you die
Neil Young/Crazy Horse - Cortez the Killer - the 9 minute+ version that's in the "Weld" double cd. Disc 2.
I just heard this version the other day. Awesome riffs throughout the song. Great song about the Spanish conquering of the Aztecs. |

Re: Music Thread: Songs to hear at least once before you die
I really love the fact that after "getting" into music 10+ years ago, I still find, almost weekly, new music (rather, music that is new to me) that is great. It's exciting to know that for the rest of my life there will be music to listen to. I know that about 10 years down the road I'm going to get BIG into jazz, I can just feel it.
I digress. Just like the OP discovered Jeff Buckley recently, I discovered Ryan Adams. I think, "Cold Roses", "Carolina Rain," and "Magnolia Mountain" are fantastic songs. The first song I thought of when I read this thread title is "The Decline" by NOFX. Excellent musical diatribe. -Claude |

If there is a heaven, these melodies were written there….. Flower duet from Lakme, by Leo Delibes Get through the first 1 ½ minutes….It’s just an intro to the main theme. The harmony and lyricism of this piece is ethereal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX-6Ej2lnwg Eric Satie, Gymnopdies 1-3 and Gnossienes 1-4 Take the time to sort through the many performances here. The evocative beauty of these pieces stem from the stunning simplicity of their composition. http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...ie&search= Puccini, Madame Butterfly…..”Un bel di, vedromo” The emotion, beauty and power of this aria brings tears to the eyes of those who know the story of Madame Butterfly. And again, from Puccini……..La Boheme……Musetta’s Waltz…”Quando me’n vo” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yrg9Ya5DuoU Ralph Vaughn Williams…..The Lark Ascending. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbcuteYm-EA Vaughn Williams is certainly at the top rung of the list of the best composers of melodies of all time. This is only one (and not the best, IMO, but it’s what I could find) of the many that dwell within his vast body of work. If melodies are your thing, you would be well served exploring his music. Get your hands on a copy of his Sea Symphony (EMI CD7 47212 2). The 2nd movement, with lyrics by Walt Whitman is transcendental. There are so, so many more…………..The above are a few of my favorites. Hope you enjoy them. Myrt...... [/ QUOTE ] amazing, thank you |

Re: Music Thread: Songs to hear at least once before you die
This is a great thread and I am thankful for some of the gems I've found in here that I have never heard before. There are few things that make me as happy as hearing a masterpiece song for the very first time... especially when the song was written a long time ago.
For some reason the title of this thread made me think of songs I would want to hear on my death bed... so here are a few of mine: I'm Ready: Tracy Chapman This Patty Griffin song is really something special I think. Of course the live youtube recording sucks, but here it is: Up to the Mountain I can't believe I'm about to link something from American Idol.... but the song is so good, Jeff Beck is so amazing, and Kelly Clarkson just flat out sings the song the right way: Beck/Clarkson Up to the Mountain Irieguy |
