Default newbie practice question

So I got a set of clubs, just played for my 2nd time, and am very passionate about the game thus far. I have a net to practice driving (which has helped a ton). However, many say that you can improve your game most by practicing your short game. I can chip around the back yard, but now what to practice my putting. Is there a way to practice without going to a course and paying? Practice on carpet?

You're working on mechanics, mostly at this point, so carpet is absolutely fine...

Training aids are very useful if you have the $$ for them (Dave Pelz's website has a great selection)...or just get some cheapie foam holes (they're in all golf stores) and putt into them. The best distance is 15-20' if you can manage it.

Once you get better, and you want to work on reading greens, then the course is necessary.

Getting your short game will help you more in the long run i think. I can drive 270-310 but that does not matter unless you can get the ball in or near the hole from 20 yrds in...

Work on your setup and alignment and shorter putts.

Im sure you can find some good tips on a proper setup/grip/alignment. Just groove that indoors so you can take it out to the course once you get there.

OP, if you can find a nice practice range, you are golden. Usually, the practice chipping green and puting green are free - just the range balls cost. Sometimes there are so many practice balls laying around you can just practice chipping/sand/putting for a couple hours and not pay a dime.
