ive been to one group interview before. it was a horrid experience and once it was over, i immediately left knowing i didnt want the job.

the two people running the interview were looking only for personality and had no interest in skill sets. one of the questions was "if you were a cookie, what kind of cookie would you be and why?" the group of 20 of us went around and answered the question to the group. im wincing as i write this remembering the experience. that was the dumbest interview question by a landslide that ive ever been asked.

in addition to personality, what you describe as some activity they may be looking at how you work w/ others and your leadership skills.

i dont remember what i said or actually answering it. my memory is of a few others answering it. everyone knew their personalities were on trial and some people acted way too interested and excited about the question.

"wow, that's a really great question! i think id be a sugar cookie because all my friends tell me how sweet i am. hahaha!!" and then the interviewer would fake laugh along w/ her like she just heard a fabulous joke and theyd share this fake moment together that neither one of them wanted to share in the first place. it was painful watching people act that way.

I'd like to think that I would triumphantly say something about how dumb the question is, and march right out of there. In reality I would just say some stupid cookie thing and get it over with.

OK, I attended. It was dumb. First we had to list and read aloud our top ten reasons for wanting to work at the Students' Union. Everybody made the same points about location, hours, social networking, campus community experience, etc.

Then we played two games. The first was a problem-solving task where you had to tip a jar of beans into another container from several feet away using only rope, paperclips, masking tape, and elastic bands. All of the teams succeeded. What amazed me was that two of the teams had this masterfully engineered contraption where tape and elastic band expanded and contracted at the centre of four lengths of rope to form a kind of suction claw. I still don't get quite how it worked, yet two of the teams came up with it independently. The second involved folding and stacking piles of index cards as high as you could. The winning team got bubble gum.

And that was the interview. No questions related to experience, qualifications, expectations, or even personality. Guess I've got the job?

Sounds like a "you're hired, now get to know your co-workers in a fun, relaxed group setting" rather than an interview.

I've assisted in running group interviews before for resident assistants.

We'd ask questions for group discussion or give "projects" like "design the ideal dorm" or whatever.

People who missed the point tried to prove how smart they were and how much they knew about what a good RA does. People who got it made sure to demonstrate their people skills over their knowledge (ability to tactfully offer a differing opinion, mediate a dispute between other people, generally get along with others, etc.)

Yeah, they did the 'Group Interview' at my school when hiring Dons for residences. I never applied to be one, but I was talking with my Don about it one day and she said it was one of the most valuable pieces of information when deciding who to hire.

The actual games/tasks whatever are irrelevant. Its just about seeing people interact with each other. It was fun hearing about all the dumb asses who clearly didn't get the point. I think my favorite was a girl that nominated herself group leader and then kept swearing at this guy in her group because he was making her look bad by not agreeing with all of her decisions.
