Catholic weddings & Women\'s Attire
The invitation asked for formal attire.
I recently had the pleasure of attending a nice Catholic ceremony for one of my better college friends. The ceremony was held at The University of Maryland, the weather was beautiful and we all had a great time. All the boys were wearing at a bare minimum, slacks, dress shirt, tie and dress shoes. This equated to business formal. What were women wearing you ask? Dresses, which looked as appropriate to wear out to a dive bar as to a wedding. Several women wore open-toe shoes, which I consider the equivalent to a casual shoe. Please explain how men have to dress up wearing "dresses." |

Open toed shoes, particularly in the summer time, can be very formal.

This is the same thing that goes on in professional workplaces. Men wear suits. Women wear whatever they want, and mostly get away with it because their bosses really don't have any idea of what's really appropriate and are afraid to call them on it.

[/ QUOTE ] This, in general, is the gospel truth. I was asked by my VP once to speak to a female subordinate about her dressing habits. That was lots of fun. |

matt, I'd love to know how you approached the situation and what you said. [/ QUOTE ] I basically read the section from the employee handbook that covered dress codes and pointed out that the rules were the rules. There were a bunch of "But Becky in accounting does it too" type remarks. All I could do was say that Becky didn't work for me. |

This occurs at orchestra concerts as well. The male musicians will be dressed in white tie while half their female counterparts are wearing pantsuits.
