A great article on Kerry Wood
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/03/sp...mp;oref=slogin
1. It's a really depressing story. 2. I've always wondered how good (or even great) Wood would have been. 3. One of the best sports article I've read (if anyone has others, even if old, please share) 4. Freakin' A. "torn labrum, torn rotator cuff, torn ulnar collateral ligament, every kind of arm “soreness” imaginable". That is just sick. Discuss. |

[/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] He tended to throw across his body, which meant that he was relying almost exclusively on his arm instead of using his legs as a source of energy. [/ QUOTE ] /Kerry Wood Agreed, very good article. FWIW, two of the best articles I've ever read were in SI; one on Michael Irvin's parents, and the other on the 1972 US OLY basketball team titled "A Few Pieces Of Silver". And speaking of being on-topic, SI's baseball preview issue a few years ago had a great article on complete games. Nolan Ryan once had three straight starts in the '70s that went something like; no-hitter, lost 14 inning 1-0 game to Luis Tiant, two-hitter. Four man rotation too, of course. Jack Morris had 175 complete games, Blyleven at least that many, etc. No links, sorry. |

Re: A great article on Kerry Wood
Awesome article.
Growing up a White Sox fan, I was always happy when Wood or Prior went down with injuries. But only in a strictly superficial "I hate the Cubs" way. Deep down, it always disappointed me that two young studs were being wasted away. One thing that always stuck out to me living in the Chicago area was Cubs fans jumping on Mark Prior as a "pussy" or a "baby" when he was scratched for starts. Wood was always a "gamer" and a "bulldog" because he went out and through like a man until his arm gave out. Well, look where both of them are now. Thanks to improper use, these guys will be fortunate to have meaningful major league careers. Plus you have Zambrano looking like he's going to have to go through something similar. |

Re: A great article on Kerry Wood
Kevin Orie was the 3B. Wood had arm troubles in A Ball, so you can't blame this one on Dusty.

Considering that Prior and Zambrano also seem to have health issues and Dusty's known penchant for working his starters, he definitely contributed. |
