Question about a ruling.

I thought it was clearly shown, but I could have misread the OP (I was posting while walking into work). That might make things a bit more grey, but I still hate to see the best hand lose on a technicality no matter what the circumstances.

I think it was clearly shown. He just didn't table it.

But by giving him the best w/o tabling it tends to open too many doors that are better shut.

Drawing that line keeps the one player to a hand rule near showdown in check.

But yes, it does suck to lose a pot on that kind of technicality. Can be an expensive lesson.

The degree of which it was shown is irrelevant. Anyone that has been playing live for any amount of time knows that you don't do this. You turn your hand up so the dealers sees it, the dealer then awards you any and all pots you have won and are entitled to. I can't believe anyone is defending this guy. Player error, period. Ship the shortstack the main and deal the next hand...

I've seen far worse get reversed. In a limit game, a woman tossed her cards face down towards the muck (clearly over the betting line but not quite touching any cards) and then gasped - I had the winning hand!!! She grabbed her cards and turned them over and it was the best hand. After some time in which the opponent said he thought the floor should be called, the woman admitted she had mucked her cards, and the dealer tried to sort things out on his own, the opponent graciously offered her half the pot - which she graciously accepted. I was surprised that the dealer didn't forcefully rule against her and require the floor to come over - but then most dealers I have seen do not want the floor to come over...

Another time, at 4am, a guy discarded a winning hand on the river in a similar manner, and said "oh well it hit the muck - my mistake...". The dealer then said very quietly "I don't know if thats the muck..." but the guy didn't get it. It took everything I had not to say "Pick up your *!@#$%'ing hand !!!" but I think that would have violated the one player to a hand rule. But hey, as long as we were violating rules...

If that was the case (with emphasis on "clearly shown") I'd rule the hand live and award the set of queens the whole pot in the interest of fairness (essentially rule number one).
