Re: I am staying at El Cortez...how bad is it?
El Cortez is on the perimeter of the safe part of downtown. As long as you walk briskly between EC and the Fremont Street Experience, you should be fine at any time of the day or night. DO NOT walk in the other direction (toward the Western), at night! I have made that trip during the day and it is very exciting, to put it mildly.
I was just at the EC in December. It had been over a year since my last visit and I was very impressed with how much they had cleaned up the casino. It used to smell pretty bad. I did not check out the rooms on that trip. |

El Cortez rules. It has lost a little of its charm now that they've replaced the old chips, but they also seem to have a much better air filtration system now.

BTW, CheapoVegas has pretty low standards. Check out the trip reports which are hilarious. Also take a look at some of the EC reviews on AllVegasPoker. Funny stuff.

Never and I mean NEVER stay at the Wild Wild West Gambling Hall. Tweakers in the parking lot in the rooms in the casino. Just a [censored] dump of a place. If this is ever the only place you can find a room, there's a reason for it. Cancel the trip if so.

Make sure you go down to 3rd St., just east of the Freemont Experience. You can walk there from the El Cortez. It's a privately owned street with three really cool bars/restaurants there, including Hogs & Heifers - a biker/cowboy bar where the bikini-clad bartenders get up on the bar and dance. Great local flavor.

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] And who is complaining about the neighborhood. What little wussies! Stay Home! >>>> The only complaint I have is that in some of the rooms, the shower head is like 4 feet high. Suitable for a midget to take a shower, but a normal size person has to bend over to shower. [/ QUOTE ] As a pretty small female you might understand that I fear the neighborhood and that the showers were never an issue for me [/ QUOTE ] How small are you? >rimshot< [/ QUOTE ] missed the rim on that one, buddy. |

Small question, though. For those prices, I think you can get cheaper at places like the 4Queens and comparable. Have you tried Travelaxe? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah I used TravelAxe. Gold Spike, and Western were very close in price so I went with the one that got the best reviews for cheap rooms on CheapoVegas, and another forgotten website. I wasn't overly concerned about price just couldnt afford strip prices for the weekend days. I was concerned abotu poker rating it because of the 12 hours a day I will be watchign March Madness. |

Re: I am staying at El Cortez...how bad is it?
Gold Spike is similar to the El Cortez, you can go catty-corner across the street from it and enter Binions via rear entrance, but still not the total quality experience that is the El Cortez.
Staying at the Western Hotel and Casino is best left for people that like to float down the Amazon looking for lost tribes and stuff like that. |
