I don't follow how you can hit your set/FH and not try to get all in. You called over $7 preflop to win an extra $11? I don't like the check on the turn, either. Betting there looks like a steal, and you're going to get smashed if he has KK, QQ, or KQ no matter what you do. If he has something like AJs/ATs, AA, JJ, TT, or 99, you might get a call on the turn, but won't on the river unless they hit. If they have AK or AQ, you want to get action before a scarecard (J, T, spade) comes.

Preflop: Hero calls $5.50.
Turn: Hero checks.

I think I have found a hole in your reasoning! With your call pf you are going to have to stack villain A LOT. Or possibly take it away from him but you didnīt try that either. You have to bet the turn, otherwise that call pf is lightning money on fire. Or even better, fold pf. Exactly what kind of board were you happy to put in a lot of money on, seeing as you have to stack villain ALMOST EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Waaaaay too passive. Bet $10 on the turn and push the river.

Given villain's 3-betting range preflop, the only worse hands he's holding that could call a raise are AA and AQ. A reasonable player will often fold AA to a push, and it's hard to say how often villain is 3-betting AQ preflop. It's definitely not 100% of the time.

I don't use a HUD, so I don't have stats to provide. All I could do was play this by feel. Villain was not aggressive preflop; nor was he a straight donkey. His 3-betting range likely fell between (QQ+, AK) and (TT+, AQ+). (I'm not even sure villain raises with AJ, let alone reraises from the blinds.) On the river, I beat unimproved one-pair hands (AA, JJ, a very weird AK) and AQ. I'm thrashed by KK, QQ, and TT. It's very difficult to properly weight the different possibilities without a good read, so I'm not surprised that other people have different ideas about it than I do. I was the one at the table, after all, and I didn't do a very good job of explaining my feel in the original post. Ultimately, I figure I made the right decision, at least on the river.

I agree that the rest of it is questionable. Preflop is probably a fold. And betting the turn is almost certainly better than checking. If nothing else, it would greatly clarify the situation.

Well, OK, sure. But you wouldn't have had to make that middling decision if you had bet the turn.

Well, you called, so obviously you know whether you made the right decision or not. You say you did, so I'm assuming they had KK, QQ, or TT.
