Training standup from home
I train grappling at a gym 3 times a week, but don't want to make the extra trips out there for standup. What equipment should i get? I have a training partner, so a lot of it will be partner drilling. Right now i'm thinking
Heavy bag speed bag sparring gloves headgear punching mitts body shield mouthguard What am i missing? Also does anyone have any experience training from home? Any advice is appreciated. |

Re: Training standup from home
That will definitely get you started. Just a heavy bag, speed bag, and bag gloves would get you started, or the headgear and punching mitts if you've got a full-time training partner.
Depending on where you're training, you might want to invest in some mats for the floor. Especially if you're going to be sparring. I've seen more people get knocked down in sparring than you'd think... someone just gets caught and is off-balance, and falls over, and if you're just training on a hard surface or rough carpet you're going to wish a mat was there instead. Next piece of gear I'd think about would be a dummy. They're not that expensive any more, and its a lot more fun and interesting to train on hitting a dummy instead of a heavy bag. You can even use it for muay thai knees and kicks. |

Re: Training standup from home
My view is that the speed bag is a near waste of time. I believe that any time or energy spent on it is better used shadow boxing. I accept this is a minority view. But if money is no object by all means throw one up. Not sure how vital the body shield is. Also, I will assume you just forgot to list a jump rope.

Re: Training standup from home
I'm assuming you have had instruction and are just looking for some place to train drills.
if not, you really need an instructor. Just throwing punches at a heavy bag isn't as effective as training somewhere, and then drilling on your own. a speedbag is dirt cheap these days. I think I got my rig (wall mount) and a decent speedbag for around $75 in a package deal at Dicks or similar sporting goods store. |

[/ QUOTE ] I'm going to take boxing classes for a few weeks to get the fundamentals down. This is going to be working out more than anything. I just figured i could work on my hands and lose a couple pounds. Will I not improve at all without a trainer there? |

[/ QUOTE ] As long as you work with a trainer every once in a while, you should be fine. Just ask the trainer to give you some drills to work on, and report back to him every once in a while to comment on your progress. You could also watch some videos, though I can't recommend anything specific. |

You should get one of those crotch protectors. A cup is fine, but a big padded diaper type thing is better. I dunno what it's called but you see kickboxers wearing it when they spar.

If you're doing kickboxing/Muay Thai, some Thai pads might be nice.
