OP: There are probably "No Kill" shelters around where you are...particularly ASPCA shelters often have this policy. Plus the dog may have a tracking device in it's skin. At least take it to the vet to make sure it doesn't give your dog any diseases.

Agree with other posters this is a good thing you have done. What odds of you keeping it if you can't find the owner? People who save animals are not usually likely to offer them up to shelters only to have them go busto if an owner/new owner can't be found.
