I have collected 1k FPP on stars and am considering this book as one option to spend them. Anyone read it? Or should I spend it on a two Greg Raymer poster instead ?

It`s an excellent book. But it`s pretty difficult math in there. Imo, you should pick an easier book first. You play NLHE ?

Sushi, it is great book to "get" things that seem incongruent in limit hold'em, but have a lot of value, especially HU. It has a lot of scenarios like playing HU against a play-all opponent e.g. and simulations to go with it. Most of the examples are kind of simple, but that's just because the sims become too complicated with more variables.
It also has a rigorous mathematical definition to stuff like EV, which other books miss. The only thing I don't like, is that it takes so long to read it... The little tidbits are eye-opening, but they are, as I said, tidbits and it takes a while to open your eyes. |

I read the whole book and spend a good deal of time trying to understand the toy games and try to find ways to apply these to the normal mid-stakes LHE games I play.
The book helped improve my thinking about limit hold'em somewhat, but the entire chapter on optimal play was mostly a waste of time for me. I learned a few things but it took forever to get through. The other chapters are easier to read and will help you think about the poker more mathmatically. (however you must already have a solid understanding of basic poker math) |
