Seen it and yes it is very good.
Never read the book.

Vince Vaughn was surprisingly good in his role.
Emile Hirsh is fantastic in it.

Whoa, I never knew they made a movie. I loved the book, and will likely check it out on the big screen.

Edit to add:

Killingbird,

Terrible way to start what could have been a great topic.

The book was incredible. Maybe the best nature book I have ever read--I dunno Edward Abby is tough to beat--anyway the book is gripping and the story is fascinating.

The movie from the previews that I have seen are actually look good, man I hope it is and it isn't a huge letdown. I love Emile Hirsch and his movies and Jena Malone is turning into an indie queen.

I really liked the book and dont know if ill see the movie. From the previews it seems like they made McCandliss(sp?) into some happy go lucky young kid out for adventure. From the book it seems pretty apparent he was troubled and came close to starving numerous times. The one thing that makes me want to see the movie is Vince Vaughn.

Also, i agree with tdarko. Anyone who hasnt read Desert Solitaire by Abbey should definitely pick it up.

popeye,

The first preview I saw had me skeptical but it was the shorter preview and it was more of a portrayal of a celebration of life and freedom which is only half of what went on. Then last night I saw In the Valley of Elah and there was a long preview and near the end it showed what looked like a withered Hirsch balled up, rocking back in forth or something and also showed some close up shots of panic on his face. Maybe Charlie can tell a little more.

Yea, Desert Solitaire is a must read.

I saw the movie. It was good, but it was a bit heavy-handed (I'll attribute that to Sean Penn having too much creative control), and twenty minutes too long. I think it did a decent job of portraying McCandless as an idealist and a selfish [censored] bag.
