Stay the Course
Bush wants to stay the course. Well, his course is to spend more each year on the war.
So far this year, we've spent 173 billion. He has been given 150 billion for 2008 and wants another 50 billion. Just how much is 200 billion dollars? Let me help you out....it's $546,945,210.00 per day in 2008 That's five hundred and forty six million (and change) per day. The children, of children alive today (who cannot yet produce sperm) will be paying for this war. Is it really worth it? |

Re: Stay the Course
How can you put a price on spreading freedom and democracy to the world? It is our noble calling to stay the course.

[/ QUOTE ] And that doesn't include the billions of dollars of wear and tear on the equipment each year of the war, the millions the Army is giving away to boost recruiting, etc. I read in an Army article that 1 year in Iraq under these operating conditions, patrol mileage, etc., for an M1A1 tank equates to 10 years of its service life -- don't have a link, though as that was a while ago... But hey, failure is not an option (until I'm out of office). |

Re: Stay the Course
Jesus, you guys are just as big of sheep as the blind bush-supporting neocons.
I don't like Iraq. I don't like how we got there. I don't like Bush. However, I think pulling out of Iraq now would be a huge mistake. If we do that, we are dooming that country to a horribly violent and bloody civil war. Then when that's over, the most likely scenarios are either Iran will take over or another batthist type party will. On top of that, pulling out of Iraq will embolden every other single terrorist cell/group and anti-American regime. It will send one hell of a strong signal that we're weak and won't follow-through. Yea, I don't like Iraq, but I'm sure as hell not in the "bush is a moron so we should pull out" school of thought. |

Re: Stay the Course
Not to speak for Kaj but he basically implied that Bush is just trying to save face as Bush knows he'll be gone in less than 18 months. After that it's the next guys/gals problem and what they do is on them, the next guy/gal.

Re: Stay the Course
embolden? How is the war as is not encouraging attacks on US interests? The US out of Iraq will take the wind out of their sails.
Who cares what happens to the Iraqi people? I just want the oil. |

They'll just say "oh, the US gave up? We can just play nice then and go back to mosque". While our current precense may encourage attacks and hatred for the US, us giving up and leaving the country to ruin make the problem 10X worse IMO. And I'm sure you're joking with the other comment, but I seriously think most of you would leave the Iraqi people to whatever horrible fate awaits them just to make Bush look bad. That's sad. |

This sort of nation building is akin to a few people agreeing to split the bill evenly at dinner and then one guy buying a side order of Ferrari. |

On top of that, pulling out of Iraq will embolden every other single terrorist cell/group and anti-American regime. It will send one hell of a strong signal that we're weak and won't follow-through. [/ QUOTE ] Unfortunately, history from 2003 to the present has shown that our presence in Iraq has emboldened the rise of more terrorists, not decreased them. So the constant cry of "we must stay and win even if we're creating more enemies faster than we can kill them" is beginning to ring hollow. |
