Default I think I took a huge step towards anarchocapitalism today...

...after getting my first property tax assessment as a homeowner. Talk about your bad beats.

PS Oh yeah, I'm back from deployment for those who care.

It's good that you are starting to see the exploitive nature of the criminal gang that rules over the territory you are in.

I've been thinking about subsidized education lately and something that I've been mulling through my head is that subsidized education might help the rich more than it helps the poor.

You can subsidize post secondary education but you cant force people to go. And I believe (although I have no stats on hand) that children from poor families are probably less likely to understand the benefits or have the capability of making the grades to make it into university. Kids of rich parents are going to see and be taught directly the long term benefits of having a low time preference and therefore are more likely to put in the time to achieve the marks needed for universities. These kids then get subsidized by the state when they obviously dont need it. I've never understood the "the poor need x, so lets let the government subsidize everyone". But if anyone has any stats to refute this I'd like to see them because this is a very tenuous idea at this point.

In any case I think there is more than enough individual benefit that we dont need to incentivize individuals to go out and get an education. If the individual gains more than society we will see them pursue goals that benefit us too. You could basically say the same thing about business. The more businesses are able to trade the more everyone benefits therefore we should subsidize business. Which would initially mean cutting taxes for them. In the end society benefits through education through the expense of taxes on other areas of society. The unseen destroyed capital is much harder to determine than all the sweet 'free' stuff the government gives us.

I also think that we should concentrate on creating a society where education isnt a requirement to have a decent job. Preventing poverty is a much more important goal than band-aiding it over once we already have the problem.

Since the city gives me some sweet rubber garbage and recycling bins in exchange, I can't complain about the thousands and thousands of dollars of taxes paid. It's not like I'm not getting something in return.
