$109 EPT Satellite - Tough Fold?
Hi,
Satellite to to the weekend EPT qualifier. Blinds 75/150. Hero has 2805 (less than average at this point) Villain has 8170 (one of the chip leaders) I am UTG with Q [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] Q [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] and open min raise to 300 Folds to Villian on the button who raises 900 to 1200. SB and BB fold. If I call, I am left with an awkward stack size OOP. So that leaves, folding or pushing. Is one or the other clearcut to you in this situation? Thanks, Jonathan |

And I'm sorry he had a better hand this time - the results are unimportant. But the min raise hurts my brain. dsahdahdahajghkj |

Quick question before I get into the decision... Why did you minraise? What was the reasoning behind the minimum raise?
Anyways, shove |

Re: $109 EPT Satellite - Tough Fold?
I personally don't hate min-raising all that much if it's done correctly. I remember reading in the FTP Poker strategy guide (tournament edition) that Chris Ferguson advocates a min-raise in early position. His argument is that it will basically have the same effect as a 3BB raise on pretty much everyone except the blinds, who will be facing tough decisions post-flop even if they get good odds to see the flop. It's also consistent with a small ball approach to the game. Anyway, to answer OP's question, it's a clear shove here. Button is more likely trying to push you around with a weaker hand than having AA or KK. He's giving you a good chance to double up, and you're going to need those chips to get the package. |

manub, you don't play small ball with QQ with 19 BBs - you WANT to get it all-in.
Easy shove OP - you're ahead of his range and have odds. I doubt villain has a very wide range, but still QQ is good enough even vs JJ+,AK. |

I've been experimenting recently with the min raise in early position ever since reading Chen and Ankemann's book. They do some game theory analysis which leads them to make small raises up front. I've been trying it out and its interesting. In this particular case, If my goal is to get all the money in PreFlop, then the min riase worked out just great didn't it? Allin as first in doesn't cut it. I decided to reraise allin preflop, which I guess seems pretty obvious to most of you. But when I got shown KK and was eliminated I began to doubt my play, which is why I posted the hand here. Just checking. Thanks, Jonathan |

A standard raise in the region of 3 - 5x the BB will get the job done just the same. Except that it is preferable for a number of reasons. You are going to be raising from UTG with stuff that isn't AA - QQ right? Are you planning to min - raise your entire range? This is really basic stuff tbh. Min raising first into a pot is bad (unless you are way deep in a tournament with a very low avg stack to blind ratio and people are folding to it). And doing vastly different things with the top end of your range as compared to the rest of it "in order to get some action" is also very bad. Unless Bill Chen says otherwise of course... |
