Pennsylvania has all the best rackets
This pisses me off. The state I live in controls all of the best money-making schemes.
PA is the drug dealer: they sell liquor and wine through their own stores. They assign dealers to sell cases of beer through a controlled cartel. PA skims off the top of the gasoline and cigarette sales. The mexican grocery that I used to buy tomatillos from got closed down by the police because they had a few slot machines in the back room. Now, the state set up a 'gaming' board to choose which interests are worthy of opening 'slot parlors'. The Pennsylvania lottery advertizes incessantly and has something like a 40 percent take out, while the lottery that I want to start would only have a 10 percent rake. It should also be pointed out that city of Reading police officers have died to protect the state's desired monopoly on psychoactive drugs. What is left for me? FWIW, the state has created major market inefficiencies for me to exploit. |

If they were opened up to competition, the profit margin would go way down. Casinos in Illinois are taxed at 70% of revenue (not profit), but the private businesses that operate them are still profitable. This wouldn't be possible if that market were opened to competition. I suppose Canis could make a lot of money if PA gave him a license, but if he's asking for these markets to be deregulated, it would be a lot harder. |

I dunno Iron, I am starting to realize how these regulations make it easier for me to make money, albeit illegally.
Unfortunatally, I am too liberal to be an employee of Penn National. Unless you conform, you can't get a job in these lucerative licenced rackets. |

Govman, thanks for indirectly pointing me to the consumers union.org website. BCBS advertizes A LOT where I live and I think its a load of baloney.

Re: Pennsylvania has all the best rackets
I hate control states. The liquor laws everywhere are so arcane. Those puritans in Massachusetts have a three liquor license law for retail chains in the state - so much for buying wine/beer/liquor with your grocieries. The idiots that live there even shot down a referendum that would have allowed (or something to this effect) grocery chains to carry more wine licenses. No, you may not purchase wine for yourself where it is most convenient! You must make a second trip to some random liquor store that closes ridiculously early!
