Default Laptop Dead...Problem Salvaging Data

Ok, here's the deal. My laptop's dead, I took out the HD and put it into an enclosure so I can plug it into my desktop via USB and it treats it as an external drive.

A few problems. I do not see all the files. I see nothing that was on the desktop. I see nowhere that would be holding my outlook express e-mails or address book. I see nothing that was in My Documents. Uh oh. That is a major problem. If I go to the Documents and Settings folder and click on my name I get an access is denied error box. The folder says empty anyway.

When my computer was running I used a password to logon, could this be preventing me from seeing things? I don't see how as I see other stuff but I figured I'd throw it out there.

Other than that...uh....well....that's all I got.

Help please.

How'd your laptop die? If the HDD died, I wouldn't be too surprised at what you described. You'll probably need to send it off to someone who does data recovery.

As for the password thing, I don't think this is an issue. I use a password to log-in to Windows XP and can view my Windows files just fine when I'm running Linux.

I was playing a few MTT's and the sucker at first for a second dimmed like it was on battery power then just went completely dead. No noise. I smelled a little something burning too, no smoke. Now it will not turn on.

I'll bring it where you said, thanks for the advice.

It could be if you set your documents to be private (Windows asks you this when you create a new user account). Try to take ownership of the folder. This might be a good reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
