Laptop Dead...Problem Salvaging Data
Ok, here's the deal. My laptop's dead, I took out the HD and put it into an enclosure so I can plug it into my desktop via USB and it treats it as an external drive.
A few problems. I do not see all the files. I see nothing that was on the desktop. I see nowhere that would be holding my outlook express e-mails or address book. I see nothing that was in My Documents. Uh oh. That is a major problem. If I go to the Documents and Settings folder and click on my name I get an access is denied error box. The folder says empty anyway. When my computer was running I used a password to logon, could this be preventing me from seeing things? I don't see how as I see other stuff but I figured I'd throw it out there. Other than that...uh....well....that's all I got. Help please. [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]

How'd your laptop die? If the HDD died, I wouldn't be too surprised at what you described. You'll probably need to send it off to someone who does data recovery.
As for the password thing, I don't think this is an issue. I use a password to log-in to Windows XP and can view my Windows files just fine when I'm running Linux.

I was playing a few MTT's and the sucker at first for a second dimmed like it was on battery power then just went completely dead. No noise. I smelled a little something burning too, no smoke. Now it will not turn on.
I'll bring it where you said, thanks for the advice.

[/ QUOTE ] It could be if you set your documents to be private (Windows asks you this when you create a new user account). Try to take ownership of the folder.
