Ethics: You find a wallet, how much $ in it to make you just take it?
alright, let me start out with a brag, I am in an airport right now, and a couple hours ago (read: I've been in the damn airport several hours...) I was in the bathroom when I saw some guys wallet sitting next to the shitter. I am proud to say I just grabbed it on my way out and then handed it off to the security guard who for some reason was waiting right outside the bathroom (who then probably pocketed the cash and tossed the rest...).
I debated opening it to see what was in it, who owned it, etc. but did not, I figured depending on what was inside I might be tempted to alter my course of action. which raised this very interesting ethical question; if you found a wallet, how much cash would it have to have inside for you to take it? this thought jumped into my mind, and I think that was why I didn't even open the wallet, because I thought if the thing had a bunch of cash in it I'd be tempted to just yoink and run. How much cash would it need to have for you to take the money and run (also consider, taking it is low risk, the bathroom was empty)? |

return it unless something ridic is in it like 3k+. Only really returning it b/c ive lost my wallet around the house and I know how insanely stressed I get when i cant find it and it has all my cards in it.

Re: Ethics: You find a wallet, how much $ in it to make you just take
I once found a wallet with $300 at the Brown Line stop. I turned it in immediately. That amount was a lot to me back at that time, so I'd like to think I'd return a much greater sum now without hesitation.
Whether you're religious or not, the Golden Rule is a pretty good idea. |

If it's a nice wallet, it's mine. the guy can have what's inside though.

Is it weird that I voted for depends on owner and that I'd return any sum?
If its someone I like or don't know, they get the wallet back whether its empty or has $100k. If its my sworn enemy, I take the cash and toss the rest on the sidewalk. |

[/ QUOTE ] The more money that is in the wallet should make you want to return it more. Someone is realy going to suffer if they loose a large amount of cash. Myself I would take the money and throw it in the trash, but Im not trying to be moral. |

Re: Ethics: You find a wallet, how much $ in it to make you just take
Kinda related:
A buddy of mine has lost 2 flags (bellagio $5k chips) in his life. One was found in the Four Seasons (he was staying there) and he got it back. The phone call went something like: "Yeah I know this is unlikely, but did anyone find a $5k bellagio chip on the ground probably near [insert name of restaurant here]." Someone had found it, and they gave it to him. The other one was never found, and it was lost near or around the actual Bellagio poker room. So, 50% of the time he got it back. After the second time he got himself a sort of pouch to put them in because they can easily fall out of a pants pocket. |

[/ QUOTE ] If someone's carrying around a few grand in cash in their wallet, I'm gonna assume they've got quite a bunch more in the bank, in which case I take it because hey, it's just a drop in the bucket to them. Either that, or they're just an idiot who likes to carry a lot of money around with them, in which case they're too stupid to be handling such large amounts of it. I take the cash and return the wallet no matter the amount, and I'd expect the same to happen to me if I were to lose my wallet. I can always use an extra $20-$100,000 bucks. |
